Highlands

So much history in North Carolina, it was like making an x on the map to figure where the heart of the Blue ridge Mounatains was, but in a way that is how the Popularity of the highlands came to be.

Since this North Carolina town arranges itself on a ridge 4,000 feet above sea level, the "high" in Highlands is entirely justified.Yet it has taken more than altitude to uphold this town's reputation as a favorite summer refuge for more than a century. It's the related gift of remoteness that's key. Getting to Highlands requires intent. You don't pass through on the way to somewhere else.On approachYou go slowly. You pay attention to the road as it narrows and winds upward. The air feels cooler. The light changes. And when prudence allows, you take in the views: the pastures, the pines and towering tulip poplars of the Nantahala National Forest, the dramatic drop-off into the Cullasaja River Gorge. Lake Sequoyah was created in 1927 by damming the Cullasaja, and its tree-lined shores and vintage cottages suggest the Adirondacks.

Appalachian Dancing Called Clogging

As long as I can remember Clogging has been a free spirited dance, with its history going back to Irish river dance style, I am not sure just how and when it came to North Carolina, but it was brought in by Irish and Scottish settlers.
So when you ride though Beautiful North Carolina mountains, and you hear a Banjo or a fiddle or both, Look out you will see some cloggers.

COAL MINERS do it. Librarians do it. Politicians do it. Some keep their feet barely on the floor, heels and toes thumping with dizzying speed, torsos virtually motionless. Others skip and stomp, or slap their thighs. They’re clogging, and carrying on an old Appalachian tradition. “You don’t need fancy clothes or fancy steps. It’s not important what you do, just that you keep time,” says Jane George, who spent decades teaching clogging and other mountain dance in rural schools. Clogging and its kin are becoming more popular because of standardized steps and increasing interest in southern Appalachian heritage. The dances are no longer relegated to barns and back porches.

The Industrial Highlands

the Piedmont/triad region has been the back bone of North Carolinas Industry, This area is the home of the Burlington outlet center, A place to visit and save money when you shop.

The days when the South was a purely agricultural region have long been over. While the level of industry here still does not compare to the massive steel industrial complexes of the Rust Belt, North Carolina does have its share of light to medium industry – and a great deal of it is concentrated along the I-40/I-85 corridor in the northwest corner of the Piedmont. Indeed the Triad region – named for the three cities of Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem – has long been the cornerstone of North Carolina industry.

The Coastal Plain of North Carolina is one of the most historic regions of the country, essentially beginning the history of English-speaking peoples in America. In the late sixteenth century Sir Walter Raleigh, an English aristocrat, obtained permission from Queen Elizabeth to found a colony in "the Virginias" (people were a little vague about geography back then) for the purpose of prospecting for gold (the Spanish Conquistadors had shown the world how lucrative America could be after they looted the Aztecs and the Incas), growing tobacco and generally making a killing in the European market.

Save Money at the pump

Wow! Can I really cheat and save money when I buy gas or fuel? Yes you can, and in a legal way.
There is a difference in saving money and stealing, when I say cheat, I mean in a good way, I simply mean shop smart.

Using the right credit card, if your car can use regular gas why use premium, off brand gas stations offer the same gas as do the brand name fuel stations.

Good Ideas? Check it out.

* Use a universal credit card, that will give you money back when you purchase fuel
* Use a off brand gas station
* If your user manual says you can use regular gas, then use regular gas, instead of the more expensive fuel

* Change the air filter regularly. A dirty filter can lower gas mileage.

* Maintain the recommended level of air pressure in the tires. Drivers
can lose two percent of fuel economy for every pound of pressure under
the recommended pounds per square inch.

* Drive at 55 mph. Tests have shown that a car driven at 65 mph will use
17 % more fuel than one driven at 55 mph.

* Fill up early in the morning. The afternoon sun can heat and expand the
gas in the station's fuel tank so drivers get less for their money.

The Tar Heel State

A Nick name just has the tendency to stick with you, even in Football.

* Nickname, The Old North State or The Tar Heel StateIn 1629, King Charles I of England "erected into a province," all the land from Albemarle Sound on the north to the St. John's River on the south, which he directed should be called Carolina. The word Carolina is from the word Carolus, the Latin form of Charles. When Carolina was divided in 1710, the southern part was called South Carolina and the northern, or older settlement, North Carolina. From this came the nickname the "Old North State." Historians have recorded that the principal products during the early history of North Carolina were "tar, pitch, and turpentine." It was during one of the fiercest battles of the War Between the States, so the story goes, that the column supporting the North Carolina troops was driven from the field. After the battle the North Carolinians, who had successfully fought it out alone, were greeted from the passing derelict regiment with the question: "Any more tar down in the Old North State, boys?" Quick as a flash came the answer: "No, not a bit, old Jeff's bought it all up." "Is that so; what is he going to do with it?" was asked. "He's going to put on you-un's heels to make you stick better in the next fight." Creecy relates that General Lee, upon hearing of the incident, said: "God bless the Tar Heel boys," and from that they took the name (Adapted from Grandfather Tales of North Carolina by R.B. Creecy and Histories of North Carolina Regiments, Vol. III, by Walter Clark).

North Carolina Flag

A flag has many meanings, but none any higher than respect,

People salute flags, they say allegiances.

The same is in North carolina

THE STATE FLAGThe flag is an emblem of antiquity and has commanded respect and reverence from practically all nations from the earliest times. History traces it to divine origin, the early peoples of the earth attributing to it strange, mysterious, and supernatural powers. Indeed, our first recorded references to the standard and the banner, of which our present flag is but a modified form, are from sacred rather than from secular sources. We are told that it was around the banner that the prophets of old rallied their armies and under which the hosts of Israel were led to believing, as they did, that the flag carried with it divine favor and protection.

The Seal of North Carolina

Before the goverment of North Carolina was ever implimented a seal was used for important documents

seal.gif (GIF Image, 348x347 pixels)

THE GREAT SEAL OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINAA seal for important documents was used before the government was ever implemented in North Carolina. During the colonial period North Carolina used successively four different seals. Since independence six seals have been used.Shortly after King Charles II issued the Charter of 1663 to the Lords Proprietors, a seal was adopted to use in conjunction with their newly acquired domains in America. No official description has been found of the seal but it can be seen in the British Public Record Office in London. The seal had two sides and was three and three-eighths inches in diameter. The impression was made by bonding two wax cakes together with tape before being impressed. The finished impression was about one-fourth inch thick. This seal was used on all official papers of the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, embracing both North Carolina and South Carolina.

To love Beautiful North Carolina is to fall in love with it's early history

North carolina's History is an exciting reading experience, once you reead the articles, you just can't wait to visit.

Early History

At the time of the first European contact, North Carolina was inhabited by a number of native tribes sharing some cultural traits, but also distinguished by regional and linguistic variations. Three major language families were represented in North Carolina: Iroquoian, Siouan, and Algonquian. The Iroquoian tribes--the Cherokee, Tuscarora, Meherrin, Coree, and Neuse River (which may have been Iroquoian or Algonquian)--were related linguistically and culturally to the Iroquois tribes to the north. The Cherokee were located in the mountains on the western boundaries of the state and the Tuscarora, Meherrin, Coree, and Neuse River were located in the coastal plains. Located primarily in the piedmont area, or central portion, of the state were the Siouan tribes: the Cape Fear, Catawba, Cheraw, Eno, Keyauwee, Occaneechi, Saponi, Shakori, Sissipahaw, Sugaree, Tutelo, Waccamaw, Wateree, Waxhaw, and Woccon. The Algonquian-speaking tribes represented the southernmost extension of predominantly Northeastern Woodlands tribes and were located entirely in the tidewater area of the state. These were the Bear River, Chowan, Hatteras, Nachapunga, Moratok, Pamlico, Secotan, and Weapomeoc.Since most historical accounts of travelers and settlers dealt with either the Cherokee
