The days when the South was a purely agricultural region have long been over. While the level of industry here still does not compare to the massive steel industrial complexes of the Rust Belt, North Carolina does have its share of light to medium industry – and a great deal of it is concentrated along the I-40/I-85 corridor in the northwest corner of the Piedmont. Indeed the Triad region – named for the three cities of Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem – has long been the cornerstone of North Carolina industry.
